Likemillstones the nightly mists weigh on the buildings high;
AlthoughSpring is breathing one feels the late Autumn is nigh.
Theprecious lute is dusty, and the charming music dies;
It’sa pity in our old country no Beauty will shine! 2
1.Ding Ling, a woman writer. On May 14th, 1933, she was arrested bythe Kuomintang agents. When it was rumoured that she had been killed. Lu Xunwrote this poem in memory of her.
2.According to Qu Yuan’s poem Li Sao, “Beauty”also implies “sagacity” or “eminence”.
