　　Europe alla Romana: the EU at 60

　　Sixty years ago, with the carnage of the second world war alive in the memory, plenipotentiaries from six European countries met in Rome's Palazzo dei Conservatori to establish the European Economic Community, the forerunner to today's European Union. Today their successors - 27 heads of government - will travel to the Italian capital to reaffirm their vows to one another. After receiving Pope Francis's blessings this evening, tomorrow the leaders will assemble in the Palazzo to sign a brief (and bland) declaration of European values. They will meet in an atmosphere of cautious optimism: Europe's economies are picking up, and political centrists are confident about taking the fight to populists. One leader, though, will not be present. Theresa May, Britain's prime minister, will stay at home putting the finishing touches to a letter she will send the EU on March 29th, officially beginning the first departure of a member the club has ever known.
