  Part Ⅱ

Listen to the following passages and then choose the best answer to each question by blackening the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET. You may need to scribble a few notes to answer the questions. There are 3 passages in this part, each with 5 questions. And each question carries 2 points. You will hear each passage only once. At the end of the recording of each passage, you will have 2 minutes to finish the questions.

  Passage One

Fidel Castro was born out of wedlock. His father was a wealthy sugar plantation owner. His mother was his father's maid. Castro lived on his father's farm in eastern Cuba and grew up alongside poor Haitian laborers. He witnessed at first hand the vast inequality poor people suffered.

In 1945, Castro studied law at the University of Havana. He started studying the ideas of Karl Marx. In 1952, he ran as an independent candidate for the Cuban congress, but his political career plans were thwarted by Batista's military coup and repressive control. Castro lost faith in U.S.-sponsored democracy.

Batista's Cuba had become a playground for rich American tourists and the mafia. Corruption made many Cubans face abject poverty and stand up against the government. The Castro brothers formed underground revolutionary organizations, and won support from South American guerrilla fighters. In 1959, Castro entered Havana as a hero.

Fidel Castro was a thorn in Washington's side. He allied the island nation firmly to the Soviet Union. Despite the constant threat of a U.S. invasion, 638 assassination plots by the CIA, as well as the long-standing economic embargo on the island, Castro managed to continue the communist revolution in Cuba.

Castro maintained his rule through 10 U.S. presidents, including President Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963. In 2006, he underwent complex surgery that removed him from office, and in 2008 he officially passed his duties on to his brother, Raul Castro. In November 2016, Fidel Castro died at the age of 90.

  Passage Two

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced on Thursday a new rule under the Endangered Species Act, instituting a near-total ban on the domestic commercial trade of African elephant ivory in an effort to protect the severely endangered animals.

The regulation restricts all ivory sales except for lawfully imported antiques that are at least one-century-old, and to items like musical instruments and firearms that were made using less than 200 grams of ivory. Under the previous version of the act, ivory could be traded if it had been brought into the U.S. before 1978, when African elephants were first listed as endangered, or if the elephant died of natural causes.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said it was nearly impossible to distinguish illegal ivory from legal ivory under the previous conservation law, limiting the effectiveness of enforcement. The new rule, which was first proposed in 2015, will provide federal agents with clearer guidelines in identifying illegal ivory.

Between 2010 and 2012, 100,000 African elephants were illegally killed for their ivory in the continent — an average of 96 elephants per day, or one every 15 minutes. The World Wildlife Fund announced this week that the population of Tanzania's largest elephant reserve could be wiped out within six years due to poaching.

The announcement came after highly visible displays of activism from conservation groups over the past years. In June 2015, a mass demonstration in Times Square by federal officials and conservationists resulted in the crushing of more than 1 ton of ivory. In April, Kenya burned 105 tons of elephant tusks to protest poaching — the largest demonstration against illicit trade in history.

  Passage Three

An ARJ21-700 — Asian Regional Jet for the 21st Century — China's first domestically produced regional jet, made its debut flight on Tuesday carrying 70 passengers. The plane operated by Chengdu Airlines arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport after making its first commercial flight in two hours.

This is the first regional jet produced in China's initiative to compete in the world commercial aircraft market. The ARJ21-700 jet is one of a series of initiatives launched by the Chinese government to transform China from the world's low-cost factory into a creator of profitable technology in aviation, clean energy and other fields.

China is one of the biggest aviation markets, but relies on foreign-made aircrafts. Beijing wants to capture more of those sales. Its major airlines are state-owned, which represent a captive pool of potential customers to buy Chinese-made aircrafts.

The ARJ21 is intended to make its state-owned manufacturer, Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China, a competitor to Bombardier Inc. of Canada and Brazil's Embraer SA. The first flight of the ARJ21 marks the beginning of commercial, or passenger, operations for the ARJ21 and signifies the first time a domestically made regional jet has been used by a Chinese airline.

The ARJ21 initiative was launched in 2002. It was scheduled to deliver its first plane in 2007, but that was pushed back due to technical problems. A full-size jetliner under development by another state-owned company, the C919, is aimed at competing with Boeing Co. and Airbus. After delays blamed on manufacturing problems, the C919 is due to enter service in about 2019.
