  Model Test 1

  Passage A

Motor racing will have a new series next year, an all-female driver competition designed to promote and provide a stepping stone to overcome the sport's huge gender gap. The W Series created controversy when proposed last year but there is optimism that it will prove to be successful, long-lasting and make a difference to encouraging women into Formula One.

There will be six races across Europe, including one in the UK, and 20 drivers. They will not require funding but will be selected by judges, including the former driver David Coulthard, the Red Bull technical director, Adrian Newey, and Lewis Hamilton's former sporting director at McLaren, Dave Ryan. There will be a prize fund of £1.15 million.

F1 has long been a boy's club. The former chief executive Bernice Ecclestone was dismissive of women, once saying they "should be dressed in white like all other domestic appliances". He has been put out to pasture by Liberty Media which is more receptive to women drivers.

However, much of the criticism of the new venture has come from women, who argue a separate series is a retrograde step. Pippa Mann, who in 2011 was the first British woman to compete in the Indy 500, posted her scathing remarks on Twitter when the series was proposed.

Mann is not alone in this opinion, but the W Series chief executive insisted the goal is to help bridge the gap and pointed out that the structure of motorsport is not working for women drivers. One driver who may take part has been explicit about why there are low numbers of women competing and insisted limited backing has always weighed heavily against women drivers.

  Passage B

Hypertension is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and in many developed countries, including the UK, the likelihood of developing increases with age. More than a quarter of adults in England have high blood pressure, with recent figures showing the proportion rises to 58% among those aged 65—74.

A study of remote communities in the Venezuelan rainforest has backed the idea that hypertension is not an inherent part of ageing, but a result of longer exposure to risks arising from lifestyle, such as high levels of salt in the diet, lack of exercise and heavy drinking.

According to a report on Jama Cardiology journal, the research team contacted two rainforest communities. One, the Yanomami, has had very little contact with the western world. The group has a hunter-gather gardener lifestyle and does not eat much salt. The other is the nearby Yekwana community, which has experienced some aspects of western life through trade facilitated by an airstrip, including missionaries, medical professionals and miners.

The team took the blood pressure of 72 Yanomami people and 83 from the Yekwana community aged between 1 to 60. Yekwana participants showed an increase in blood pressure with age — albeit at a far lower level than seen in the US, for example. However, in the Yanomami community, blood pressure stayed approximately the same.

However, the study is very small — only 11 Yekwana individuals over the age of 40took part in the research — and the research did not unpick exactly which lifestyle and diet differences might be behind the trends for age and blood pressure.

  Model Test 2

  Passage A

Since the mid-1990s, fruits and vegetables have been helping exporters make a tasty profit in Manzhouli, a border city in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. In 2017, the city reported a total import-export volume of 18.2 billion yuan, which is $2.6 billion, up by 15.4% from 2016. More than 80% of cross-border trade is done with its nearest neighbor, Russia, according to the director of foreign trade for the local foreign trade and economic cooperation bureau. Resources such as timber, minerals and fertilizers make up the main imports.

While foreign trade in Manzhouli still faces challenges, most people involved in the fruits and vegetables sector are optimistic about future growth. Meng Lin, who runs an export business, arrived in the city in 1995 after cross-border trade began to make national headlines. At first, she exported clothing and imported timber, but in 1996, she was asked by a Russian trader to pay for imported aluminum with fruits instead of currency. This was when Meng discovered the potential market for fruits and vegetables in Siberia and Russia's Far East, a business she has stuck with for more than 20 years.

Meng said she exported nearly 10,000 metric tons of fruit in 2000, and set up her first company two years later. In 2006, she purchased an agricultural product distribution market in Russia, and later took out a long-term lease on another in Siberia to begin preparations to become an export service provider, rather than just an exporter. Meng opened her own cross-border trade and logistics complex in 2015, marking the transformation of her business, which now covers almost every link in the export chain. Small business owners and larger enterprises can rent warehouses, including cold storage, in her complex and access related services.

  Passage B

China is speeding up its development of autonomous driving and is expected to become the leader in the technology, which is believed key to the future of the automotive industry.

In a report released in October, China topped a list of 14 countries with a score of 75points out of 130, calculated with a number of indices to measure which country will be the first to introduce autonomous mobility. In half a year, China had expanded its lead over its closest rival, Singapore, to five points, while Germany ranked eighth and the United States ninth. Six months ago, China led by only one point. The advantage China enjoys is the result of several factors, mainly its leading position in electrified vehicles and favorable government policies.

One expert explained that electric vehicles have the natural advantage in terms of autonomous driving, because electric motors are easier to control than gasoline cars' engines and transmissions. China overtook the US in 2015 as the world's largest new energy vehicle market.

Electric passenger car sales totaled 451,000 in the first three quarters of the year in the country, up 75 percent year-on-year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. A survey found that 65 percent of Chinese respondents say they would consider buying electric cars.

Chinese authorities are now becoming open to the autonomous vehicle business, another factor that helped it grow its lead over other countries. In August 2018, China rolled out a set of national standards for testing smart autonomous cars on roads. Before that, a dozen regional authorities had issued their own guidelines, with the first released in Beijing in December 2017, a sign of China's eagerness for the new technology.

  Model Test 3

  Passage A

The century and a half that followed the defeat of Persia was one of very great splendors for the Greek civilization. True that Greece was torn by a desperate straggle for ascendancy between Athens, Sparta and other states and that in 338 B.C. the Macedonians became virtually masters of Greece; nevertheless, during this period the thought and the creative and artistic impulse of the Greeks rose to levels that made their achievement a lamp to mankind for all the rest of history.

The head and centre of this mental activity was Athens. For over 30 years Athens was dominated by a man of great vigor and liberality of mind, Pericles, who set himself to rebuild the city from the ashes to which the Persians had reduced it. The beautiful ruins that still glorify Athens today are chiefly the remains of this great effort. And he did not simply rebuild a material Athens. He rebuilt Athens intellectually.

He gathered about him not only architects and sculptors but poets, dramatists, philosophers and teachers. Herodotus came to Athens to recite his history. Anaxagoras came with the beginnings of a scientific description of the sun and stars. Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides one after the other carried the Greek drama to its highest levels or beauty and nobility.

The impetus Pericles gave to the intellectual life of Athens lived on after his death, and in spite of the fact that the peace of Greece was now broken by the Peloponnesian War and a long and wasteful struggle for "ascendancy" was beginning. Indeed the darkling of the political horizon seems for a time to have quickened rather than discouraged men's mind.

  Passage B

Judiciary is a branch of government whose task is the authoritative adjudication of controversies over the application of laws in specific situations. Conflicts brought before the judiciary are embodied in cases involving litigants, who may be individuals, groups, legal entities, or governments and their agencies.

Conflicts that allege personal or financial harm resulting from violations of law or binding legal agreements between litigants—other than violations legally defined as crimes—produce civilcases. Judicial decisions in civil cases often require the losing or offending party to pay financial compensation to the winner. Crimes produce criminal cases, which are officially defined as conflicts between the state or its citizens and the accused rather than as conflicts between the victim of the crime and the defendant. Judicial decisions in criminal cases determine whether the accused is guilty or not guilty. A defendant found guilty is sentenced to punishments, which may involve the payment of a fine, a term of imprisonment, or, in the most serious cases in some legal systems, even death.

Judiciaries also frequently resolve administrative cases, disputes between individuals, groups, or legal entities and government agencies over the application of laws or the implementation of government programs. Most legal systems have incorporated the principle of state sovereignty, whereby governments may not be sued by nonstate litigants without their consent. This principle limits the right of litigants to pursue remedies against government actions. Nevertheless, the right of citizens to be free from the arbitrary, improper, abusive application of laws and government regulations has long been recognized and is the focus of administrative cases.
