Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt has told North Korea that itsfailure to embrace the internet age will hold back economicgrowth.

Mr Schmidt said he had made his point “very, very clear” to hishosts in Pyongyang this week.

North Korea’s authoritarian government forbids nearly all its citizens from going online.

Mr Schmidt left yesterday after a four-day tour led by Bill Richardson, former governor of NewMexico, who tried, unsuccessfully, to lobby for the release of a US citizen detained in North Koreaon unspecified charges.

Theirs was an unusual visit by a big US business figure to a country that has been the subject ofincreasingly strong sanctions from Washington over its apparent progress towards nuclearweapons capability.

“As the world is becoming increasingly connected, their decision to be virtually isolated is verymuch going to affect their physical world,” Mr Schmidt told reporters at Beijing international airporton his return from Pyongyang.

“The government has to do something. It has to make it possible for the people to use theinternet.”

Mr Richardson described the trip as productive, saying that he had lobbied for fair treatment forKenneth Bae, a Korean-American man detained in November and accused by Pyongyang of anunspecified crime against the state, and for a halt to North Korea’s nuclear development.
