　　First submarine cable links mainland, Taiwan

　　A submarine communication cable directly link the two sides ofthe Taiwan Strait will open on Friday, according to a Chinesemainland spokesman.

　　Construction of the fiber-optic cable, the first of its kind, hasalready been completed, said Yang Yi, spokesman for the StateCouncil Taiwan Affairs Office, at a regular press conference onWednesday.

　　Once put into use, the cable will make it much easier for people on the two sides of the Strait tocommunicate, Yang said.

　　Yang said its launch will be "good news" for the mainland and Taiwan, as it is another importantachievement in developing the "three direct links" of cross-Strait mail, trade, and air and shippingservices.

　　With a length of 270 km, the cable connects the city of Fuzhou of Fujian Province on the mainlandand Taiwan's Tamsui.

　　According to the spokesman, several telecommunication operators on both sides of the Strait havejointly invested in the project, which incorporated the most advanced transmission technologies.

　　Yang also expressed the mainland's willingness to give water supplies for people in the Kinmenarchipelago, located off the coast off Fujian, to help alleviate a water shortage there.

　　"We have been concerned about the water shortage problem and will provide any support with all-out efforts to compatriots in Kinmen as long as it can do them good," Yang said.

　　"Coastal areas in Fujian are ready to supply water to Kinmen anytime upon the island's approval," he added.

　　国务院台办发言人杨毅16日在例行新闻发布会上宣布，两岸首条横跨台湾海峡、连接大陆和台湾本岛的海底光缆——“海峡光缆1号”工程已顺利竣工，将于1月18日在两岸同时举行开通仪式。

　　他说，这条光缆连接大陆福州至台湾淡水，全长约270公里，采用了目前世界上最先进的传输技术，由两岸多家电信运营商共同投资建设。“海峡光缆1号”的建成，是两岸“三通”取得的又一重要成果。它将建立起两岸间的直达通信电路，从而大幅度增加两岸通信能力，对两岸老百姓来说是个好消息。

　　在应询介绍大陆向金门供水的最新进展时，杨毅说，我们一直关注金门缺水的问题，只要是对金门同胞有利的事情，我们都会全力支持。只要台湾方面同意，福建沿海随时可向金门供水。

　　有记者问，目前金门尚义机场正在进行二期扩建，金门也有发展“免税岛”的规划。在利用金门促进两岸经贸往来方面，大陆有哪些举措或者准备?杨毅回答说，金门在两岸交流合作中确有特殊的优势，我们乐见金门继续在两岸交流合作中发挥积极作用。
