Berlin has demanded a swift explanation from Washington over allegations that an agent working for Germany’s intelligence agency was spying for the US, as German political outrage over the affair threatens a fresh diplomatic rift.

Thomas de Maiziere, Germany’s interior minister, described the claims as “very serious”. He told Bild, the newspaper: “I expect everyone to co-operate promptly to clear up these allegations – with quick and clear comments from the United States as well.”

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, foreign minister, called on Washington to provide the “quickest possible clarification of the facts”.

The allegation has exacerbated tensions between the two countries. The relationship has been fraught since it emerged in the autumn that the US National Security Agency had tapped the mobile phone of Chancellor Angela Merkel. But ties had improved recently, in spite of Berlin’s failure to persuade Washington to adopt a “no spy” agreement.

Joachim Gauck, the German president, on Saturday said the alleged double agent claim was “vexing”. Mr Gauck told ZDF television: “If this really happened, now it’s the point where I’d say it’s finally enough.”

The allegations of mass surveillance by the NSA, and the tapping of Ms Merkel’s phone, were incendiary in a country haunted by memories of the Gestapo and Stasi secret police.

Ms Merkel, who was informed of the allegations on Friday, arrived in China at the weekend, where she is travelling with a delegation of business people. Spiegel, a magazine, reported that members of the delegation told media that Ms Merkel was surprised and disappointed by the revelations.
