　　Mobility scooting: self-driving cars

　　Using electricity rather than petrol, offering services rather than products, and designing self-driving software are all tricky for carmakers that have relied on selling vehicles with internal combustion engines for over a century. Faced with these challenges, they put the pedal to the metal in 2016 to provide the transport of the future. Tech giants such as Uber, a ride-hailing service, and Google, with big ambitions in self-driving cars, once seemed to have the upper hand. But carmakers have fought back, pushing deeper into transport services and speeding development of autonomous and electric vehicles. GM began the year with a big investment in Lyft, a ride-sharing firm, and ends it by releasing the Bolt, a cheap electric car. Volkswagen bought into Gett, another ride-hailing firm, and promises more battery-powered models. And Ford is working on a robo-taxi. Carmakers are also forging deeper alliances with the tech firms that want to disrupt the industry; whatever it takes to stay in the race.
