　　决赛即将在OK小队和实力最强的ROR小队之间展开。然而，Hardscrabble一针见血的评论一下子打击了Sulley的决心。

　　Sulley: Dean Hardscrabble! If we get back into the Scaring Program, I hope there's no hard feelings.

　　Hardscrabble: Tomorrow each of you must prove that you're undeniably scary. And I know for a fact that one of you is not. (远远地看着Mike)

　　Sulley: No. He works harder than anyone.

　　Hardscrabble: Do you think he's scary?

　　Sulley: He's the heart and soul of the team!

　　Hardscrabble: Do you think he's scary?

　　面对Hardscrabble的追问，Sulley无言以对。决赛的内容是在全校师生面前通过模拟器展现惊吓功力，可无论Mike多么努力做出吓人的样子，他那圆滚滚的小身板看上去都不可怕，反倒更加可爱。Sulley一面装作若无其事的样子一起和大家训练，一面忧心忡忡。

　　决战之夜，运动场上灯火通明，座无虚席。两支队伍的队员要依次去惊吓机械人偶，由模拟器自动打分，总分高的一队最后胜出。Sulley建议Mike最后一个出场。前五对队员的对决中，OK一路逼平了实力强劲的ROR。此时，Mike对阵ROR的队长Worthington的比赛就成了决胜的关键。决赛时，Mike想到了自己曾受到的奚落，想到伙伴们的鼓励，想到自己付出的所有努力，他深吸一口气，全力以赴施展惊吓功力，竟得了满分，由此战胜了ROR。铺天盖地的欢呼向Mike袭来，整个OK小队都兴奋不已。

　　比赛结束，众人散去。唯有Mike还坐在模拟器里，沉浸在兴奋中，不断回味着刚才发生的事。不料，他却意外地发现己方的机器被人动过手脚，只要有点小动静，模拟器都会给出满分。原来，竟然是Sulley的作弊才确保了他的胜利。原来，连Sulley都不相信他的能力。原本自信心膨胀的Mike接受不了这个打击，愤愤离去。

　　真相大白，OK小队的队员们瞬间欢喜全无。Sulley独自拿着奖杯，心情格外沉重。他想留在惊吓学院，但朋友眼中的失望更令他心如刀割。他犹豫良久。最终选择向Hardscrabble坦白了一切。严厉的Hardscrabble做出开除学籍的处分，Sulley只得接受。但就在此时， Mike为了证明自己的实力，冲动之下竟然跨进了学校实验室里所设的通往人类世界的大门，想要去惊吓真正的人类小孩。

　　Mike进入了一个露营地的宿舍，可不幸的是，这里的孩子们不仅一点儿都没被吓到，反而将Mike吓得够呛。Mike很快就被大人们发现，并遭到了人类警察的追捕。一旦被抓住，他就会丢掉性命。另一边，Hardscrabble为了控制事态封锁了实验室，但OK小队的队员们再次团结起来，制造机会让Sulley潜入大门去营救Mike。在一条小河边，Sulley找到了一脸沮丧的Mike。

　　Sulley: Come on, buddy, let's get you out of here. This is all my fault. I'm sorry.

　　Mike: You were right. They weren't scared of me. I did everything right. I wanted it more than anyone. And I thought if I wanted it enough, I could show everybody that I … that Mike Wazowski is something special. I'm just not.

　　Sulley: Look, Mike, I know how you feel.

　　Mike: You do not know how I feel. Monsters like you have everything. You don't have to be good. You could mess up over and over again, and the whole world loves you. You'll never know what it's like to fail, because you were born a Sullivan.

　　Sulley: Yeah, I'm a Sullivan. I'm the Sullivan who flunked (不及格) every test. The one who got kicked out of the program, the one who's so afraid to let everyone down, that I cheated, and I lied. Mike, I'll never know how you feel. But you're not the only failure here. I act scary, Mike. But most of the time, I'm terrified.

　　Mike这才明白，占尽先天优势的Sulley其实和他一样，也有自己的弱点。他不再生气和沮丧，而是开动脑筋，利用自己丰富的惊吓知识设下陷阱，并由长相吓人的Sulley出面，将人类警察吓得魂飞魄散，从而收集到了足够的能源，重新开启回家的大门。
