In 2009, a visit to Pyongyang by former president Bill Clinton secured the release of twodetained US journalists. However, efforts over the past year to secure a visit by Bob King, USenvoy for North Korean human rights affairs, appear to have been rebuffed by Pyongyang.

“We request North Korea pardon Matthew Miller and Kenneth Bae and grant them amnestyand immediate release so they may reunite with their families,” said Darby Holladay, aspokesman for the US state department.
