Chinese authorities have not confirmed the charges are related to work by Mr Humphrey’s company, ChinaWhys, for GSK. But people close to him say he has no doubt that it was the trigger for his arrest.

The note from jail marks the first time Mr Humphrey has gone public with his grievance against GSK. He also suggests that the suspected whistleblower – Vivian Shi, GSK’s former head of government affairs in China – may have helped instigate his arrest for alleged offences.

Mr Humphrey said he had been told “the subject person” had got hold of a copy of his report into her. “We know that person is very influential and I believed she was indeed the whistleblower. Ten days after GSK told us this, we were arrested.”

Ms Shi could not be reached for comment. GSK said it had “zero tolerance for any kind of corruption” and “takes all whistleblowing allegations very seriously”. “The allegations that have been raised are deeply concerning to us. We are learning lessons  . . . and we are determined to take all actions necessary as a result.”
