  第三部分:阅读理解(Part IⅢ Reading Comprehension.本大题共20小题,每小题1.5分,共30分)

  第一节:短文理解,考生可根据文章内容从每题四个选择项中选出最佳答案。

  Passage one

The factors that add up to a happy life for most people are not what we typically hear about.Things like earning a master's degree don't make people happy over an extended period of time.Rather, the key to happiness, and the difference between happy and unhappy Americans,is a life that reflectsvalues and practices like, hard work, marriage, charity, and freedom.

  Work

When more than 1,000 people across the country were asked in 2002,"If you were to get enoughmoney to live comfortably for the rest of your life, would you stop working?"fewer than a third of theAmericans answered yes.

Contrary to widely held opinion, most Americans like or even love their work.In 2002 an amazing89 percent of workers said they were very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their jobs. This isn't truejust for those with high-paying,highly skilled jobs but for all workers across the country. And thepercentage is almost exactly the same among those with and without college degrees and among those working for private companies, nonprofit organizations, and the government.

For most Americans, job satisfaction is nearly equivalent to life satisfaction.Among those peoplewho say they are very happy in their lives,95 percent are also satisfied with their jobs.Furthermore, job satisfaction would seem to be causing overall happiness, not the other way around.

  Marriage&Family

In 2004,42 percent of married Americans said they were very happy.Just 23 percent ofnever-married people said this.Overall, married people were six times more likely lo say that they werevery happy than to report that they were not too happy. And generally speaking, married women saythey're happy more often than married men.

Marriage isn't just associated with happiness-it brings happiness,at least for a lot of us.One 2003study that followed 24,000 people for more than a decade documented a significant increase inhappiness after people married. For some, the happiness increase wore off in a few years, and theyended up back at their premarriage happiness levels. But for others,it lasted as long as a lifetime.

What about having kids? While children,on their own, don't appear to raise the happiness level(they actually tend to slightly lower the happiness of a marriage),studies suggest that children arealmost always part of an overall lifestyle.of happiness, which is likely to include such things asmarriage and religion.

  Charity

We've all heard that money doesn't buy happiness, and that's certainly true. But there is one wayto get it:Give money away.

The evidence is clear that gifts to charitable organizations and other worthy causes bring substantiallife satisfaction to the givers. If you want $50 in authentic happiness today Just donate it to a favoritecharity.

People who give money to charity are 43 percent more likely than nongivers to say they're veryhappy.Volunteers are 42 percent more likely to be very happy than nonvolunteers. It doesn't matterwhether the gifts of money go to churches or concerts;religious giving and unreligious giving leavepeople equally happy, and far happier than people who don't give.Even donating blood,an especiallypersonal kind of giving, improves our attitude.Fundamentally, the more people give, the happier theyget.

  Freedom

In fact, freedom and happiness are intimately related:People who consider themselves free are alot happier than those who don't.In 2000 the General Social Survey revealed that people who personallyfeel "completely free"or "very free"were twice as likely as those who don't to say they're very happyabout their lives.

Not all types of freedom are the same in terms of happiness, however.Researchers have shownthat economic freedom brings happiness,as does political and religious freedom. On the other hand, moral freedom—a lack of constraints on behavior.—does not.People who feel they have unlimitedmoral choices in their lives when it comes to matters of sex or drugs, for example, tend to be unhappierthan those who do not feel they have so many choices in life.

  Lessons for America

The data tell us that what matters most for happiness is not having a lot of things but havinghealthy values.Without these values, our jobs and our economy will bring us joyless riches. The factscan help remind us of what we should be paying attention to,as individuals and as families,if we wantto be happy. Our happiness is simply too important to us—and to America—to do anything less.

51.What willprobably bring about overall happiness?

A.To be satisfied with one's job B.To earn a lot of money.

C.To work for big companies. D.To gain a college degree

52.Generally,men in marriage____than women in marriage

  A.are probably under greater pressure

B.are more inclined to feel they are happy

C.are less likely to state they are happy

D.are contributing more to the family

53.According to the author,in what way can money bring happiness?

A.Buy anything you want. B.Give your money away.

C.Pay to listen to a concert. D.Own a large amount of it.

  54.What rarely brings in happiness?

  Passage Two

Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader putsquestions,as it were,to the text and get answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.

For most of the time this “conversation”goes on below the level of consciousness. At times, however,we become aware of it.This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatchis occurring between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced ourquestioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.

Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page;others take off imaginatively from words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining.Theformer represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text,The latter represents higherlevels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers.

There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that is to donot with what is read but with how it is read.We call this a "process"conversation as opposed to a"content"conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading.

If we are an advanced reader, our ability to hold a process conversation with a text is usually pretty welldeveloped. Not so our ability to hold a content conversation. It is precisely this kind of conversation thatis of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placedupon us by studying at a higher level.

55.According to the author, when will our reading become conscious?

A.When the readers expectations match with what is said in the text

B.When the reader has trouble understanding what the author says.

C.When the reader asks tough questions and gets proper answers.

D.When the reader understands a text with no difficulties.

56.Ata lower level of comprehension, readers tend to_______

A.read a text slowly and carefully

  B.read without thinking hard

C.interpret a text in their own way

D.focus on the meaning of words only

  57.A"process"conversation has to do with_____

  A.the application of reading strategies

B.matching our expectations with the meaning of a text

C.the development of our ability to check the detail

D.determining the main idea of a text

58.According to the passage,it is of great importance for readers at a higher level to maintain a balance between______.

A.conscious and unconscious levels of comprehension

B.the readers expectations and the meaning of a text

C.lower and higher levels of comprehension

  D.interpreting and criticizing a text

  Passage There

The poverty line is the lowest income that people need for an acceptable standard of livingPeoplewith income below the poverty line are considered poor.Economists study the causes of povertyin order to find solutions to the problem.

About ten percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line. However,if thesepeople had stable jobs, they could have an acceptable standard of living.Economists suggest severalreasons why poor people do not have jobs.

For one thing, more than half of the people in the United States are not qualified to work.Over 40percent of the poor people are children.By law, children less than 16 years old cannot work in manyindustries. And a large number of poor people are old. Many companies do not hire people over 65 year old.

Some poor adults do not look for jobs for a variety of personal reasons:they are sick, they havefamily problems,or they do not believe that they can find a job.Other poor people look for a job butcannot find one. Many poor adults never went to high school. Therefore, when they look for jobs theyhave few skills that they can offer.

At the present time, the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the followingways.

First,if the national economy grows, companies hire more workers. Some of the poor may find a job,and they will no longer be below the poverty line.

Second,if the government spends money on social programs, education and training for the poorpeople, the poor will have the skillto offer. Then it is more likely that they can find jobs.

Finally,if the government distributes society's income differently,it raises some poor peopleabove the poverty line. The government collects taxes from the non-poor and gives money to the poor. These payments to the poor are called welfare.

Some economists are looking for better solutions to the poverty problem. However,at the presenttime, many people still depend on welfare to live a poor life.

  Part V Writing

  范文:

When asked about one of the biggest problems today, many people say that an energy crisis isapproaching and is threatening mankind's survival. They are afraid that the world is likely to run out ofoil and metals and even to run short of food.

To this problem, most countries respond with the demand for more rigid conservation of ournatural resources.Indeed, this is urgently needed, since the present waste of energy is so serious. If thenatural resources are used economically,we can certainly slow down the present drain on the limitedenergy supply. However, the problem cannot be solved by conservation only.I think another way is todevelop new energy resources.Obviously,no matter how hard we try to save energy resources and howabundant they are,we will use them up sooner or later.I think we don't have to depend only on thecurrent energy resources. There are many other energy resources that we develop such as nuclear power, water power and solar power. If so,these resources can completely replace the conventional energy andthus solve the problem of energy crisis.

In conclusion,we should each do our little part to save the limited energy resources.Let's worktogether.
